See, here’s why I don’t buy into the whole Marichat/Ladynoir/Adrinette/Ladrien ship divide thing.
The big secret? At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter.
Not because the fandom isn’t right about the dynamics being different between the personas! The fandom is absolutely right about that. But it still doesn’t matter, and here’s why:
As soon as Marinette and Adrien start getting closer, they’ll start feeling comfortable being more completely themselves around each other, and those divides will no longer exist. And that can happen no matter which identities they start getting closer in.
In fact, it’s already starting to happen. I think you see it the most in Kung Food:

Look at Adrien acting more Chat Noir-like in front of Marinette!

Look at how strong and sassy Marinette is being in front of Adrien! (And he takes notice, too. You can see when he tells her she defended her uncle well that he’s kinda like “Whoa, I didn’t know she had it in her”.)
At the end of the day, I care about these two getting close and feeling comfortable opening up to each other and being their whole selves around each other. People talk about shipping Marichat because Marinette and Chat Noir are their “true selves”, but it’s more complicated than that. There are genuine aspects to both of their personas. I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again: They’re both more confident in costume, and that makes them feel free to express sides of themselves that they might not usually. (Although it’s also important to note that there’s much, much less of a difference between Marinette’s two personas than between Adrien’s.) But their insecurities are as real and true to who they are as the aspects of themselves they show when they’re feeling more confident are. And I don’t think it’s a coincidence that we’ve seen them start to express those insecurities around each other when they’re in civilian mode:

Whether Marinette and Adrien are being their “real selves” isn’t dependent on whether they’re wearing masks or not. It’s dependent on whether they’re around someone they feel comfortable being their real selves with. @ladyofacat wrote a post a while back saying the only one Adrien is really 100% himself around (as of now) is actually Plagg, and I completely agree. In both of their personas, there are reasons they’re not letting each other in fully and aspects of themselves they’re not really showing around each other.
I want Adrien and Marinette to be their “real selves” with each other in the sense that I want to see them get close enough that they can be all the different things they are: Silly, and serious, and confident and insecure and heroic and flirtatious and sassy and sweet. And them getting to that level of closeness isn’t dependent on whether they’re being their superhero selves or their civilian selves. It’s just dependent on them getting to a place when they can trust each other and feel comfortable around each other that way.
At the end of the day, there are only two people in this relationship, and the closer they get to each other, the less the arbitrary divisions between their personas are going to be a factor. So that’s why I don’t care about one side of the love square over another. I care about them getting to a place where the love square is no longer relevant.
Yes this ^^
