*******************************************
It was a summer afternoon and everyone was waiting in anticipation for the bell to ring. It was History and their teacher was handing them back their World War One essays.
Marinette smiled as her essay was handed back to her. A perfect score. How did she manage to be Ladybug and still get good grades was a mystery to her ,but she wasn’t complaining. Ayla peaked over her shoulder and smiled.
“Well done, girl!” Marinette blushed at the praise but was interrupted by a groan of frustration. “Dude, that doesn’t look too good.“she heard Nino say. “Gee, thanks Nino for your support, no need to rub it in.” Adrien replied angrily.
“Sorry dude, I didn’t mean to make you angry.” Nino said softly. Adrien winced, realising how mean he had sounded. “No, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t of lashed out like that.”
Ayla look at Marinette quizzically. “Hey, everything all right?” Ayla asked leaning over her desk. Nino and Adrien jumped in surprise. “Wow, Ayla, nosy much?” Nino asked irritability. “Well, what can I say? I am going to be one of the best journalists, so thank you for that compliment.” Ayla said with a smirk.
“But seriously, is everything all right? It didn’t sound like it a few minutes ago.” Ayla said pushing her glasses up. “I didn’t do to well in my history essay.” Adrien mumbled. Marinette felt her heart stop. She knew that if Adrien didn’t do well at his work, his dad would take him out of the school.
“I will help you!” Marinette said loudly. Ayla raised her eyebrows and Nino’s jaw dropped. Both of them knew that Marinette liked Adrien but this was a really bold move on her part. She had never hung out with him alone, let alone study with him. Adrien’s eyes sparked with gratitude. “You will? You would do that Marinette?”
Marinette’s heart swelled with happiness. “Yes, that’s what friends do!” she giggled. They had all been hanging out for the past few months and slowly Mariette had started to warm up to Adrien. She could now speak to him without stuttering but the blush was still there whenever they spoke.
“So, does today after school sound good? Or is it too last minute?” Marinette asked. Adrien thought and smiled. “Yes, Natalie cancelled all my photo shoots for today, so now should be fine!” he said happily. Marinette was glowing with happiness and once the bell had rung signalling that school had ended, she packed up everything.
As she picked up the essay to put into her bag, it was snatched out of her hand. “Hey!” Marinette growled and came face to face with Chloe Bourgeois. “Huh, not bad, for a goody two-shoes.” Chloe laughed. “What’s that supposed to mean?” Marinette asked through gritted teeth.
Chloe laughed. “You’re such a suck-up! You do everything the teacher tells you to do and you are this innocent girl who probably has never done anything risky.” Chloe continued an evil glint in her eye.
“Shut up, Chloe. You’re just angry because Marinette got a better mark than you!” Ayla defended. Chloe ignored Ayla and smiled coldly at Marinette.
She leaned in and whispered into Marinette’s ear,“ I bet you haven’t even had your first kiss yet ,have you? You’re probably waiting for Adrien but don’t worry, he’ll never kiss a suck-up.”
Chloe sashayed away with Sabrina frantically packing her books away and hurrying after her. “Ignore her, Marinette. Ayla said putting a comforting hand on her shoulder. Marinette smiled and looked at Adrien. There was fury in his eyes. “I can’t believe her.” he said harshly.
“She was never like this when we were younger. I’m so sorry ,Marinette.” he said softly. “It’s fine! Don’t worry, we should get going, my mom has made brioche.” she said as they walked out of the class.
Ayla and Nino said their goodbyes and left the two to walk to Marinette’s house. “Once again I’m really sorry for what Chloe did to you.” Adrien apologized. Marinette smiled. “It’s not your fault and besides, it’s not bothering me.” she said blushing. When Marinette opened the door to the bakery the scent of all things heavenly floated out and Adrien’s stomach rumbled. “Hello, Marinette! Oh Adrien, how lovely to see you again!” Sabine said giving them both a kiss on the cheek.
Adrien felt warmth in the pit of his stomach. He still missed his mom dearly but Sabine was amazing. She laid out the brioche and left to go back to the kitchen. Adrien sunk his teeth into the sweet bread and sighed happily.
Once they were done eating, they walked to Marinette’s room. Marinette had already learnt from her last experience with Adrien coming over, to store all her pictures on the inside of her closet door, were no one would find them.
Marinette took out her essay and was reminded about what Chloe had said and forced it to the back of her mind. Once she had read Adrien’s essay, she took out a pencil and began circling all of his errors. “So your first mistake is that you didn’t state the date of when the Allied Forces declared war…”
After an hour, Adrien rewrote his essay and Marinette marked it. “Well done, Adrien! This is perfect!” she said reading his essay. Adrien beamed with happiness. “Thank you for taking the time to show me where I went wrong.” he replied.
His phone rang and he picked it up. “Hello? Oh. Okay. I’ll be right there.” Adrien said glumly. When he put the phone down, Marinette already knew what was coming. “Adrien, I understand. Go home.” she said softly. Adrien sighed as he gathered his stuff and hoisted his bag on his back.
Marinette walked him downstairs where the limo was already waiting. Adrien felt his heart beat fast when he saw the faint shape of his father’s silhouette through the tinted windows.
What was he doing here?
Adrien was furious. Did his dad have to know where he was all the time? He was studying for flips sake! Suddenly a good- no a GREAT idea popped into his head. He wrapped Marinette into a hug. “We should definitely do this again sometime but without the homework.” he said softly.
Marinette thought she was going to faint but managed a small nod. He grinned at her and lightly kissed her on her cheek before walking to limo.
Adrien knew that if there was one thing his dad hated more than anyone interrupting his work, it was if he was seen ‘tarnishing’ the family name. That meant no parties, no friends (up until this point) and no fun in general to keep the paparazzi away. And hugging and kissing a complete stranger to his dad was bound to make him go crazy. Even though Marinette won the Hat Designing competition, it was likely that his dad didn’t even remember her name.
He turned around and gave Marinette a wink before getting into the car.
As the limo drove away, Marinette thought she was going to burst into flames. Adrien had KISSED her…on the cheek but it was still a kiss.
“ I bet you haven’t even had your first kiss yet ,have you? You’re probably waiting for Adrien but don’t worry, he’ll never kiss a suck-up.”
Chloe’s words echoed painfully in her head. Ignore them. Just ignore them. she thought. But it was hard not to. She didn’t take many risks, she always did her homework and…what if she was a suck-up? Were suck-ups bad?
Marinette walked back inside but she couldn’t help but think if Chloe was right.
